Dia de Los Muertos

The Day of the Dead is a holiday that takes place in different regions of Mexico.People celebrate the "temporary return" of their deceased loved ones. It's celebrated on November 1 and 2;November 1 is dedicated to commemorate deceased children and November 2 adults. To facilitate the return of souls to earth, families build an "altar" that includes pictures of the deceased, petals of marigold flowers, and place candles and offerings. The offerings are placed on a table with at least two tiers, symbolizing heaven and earth. If it is made of three levels, purgatory is added. Sometimes, the altars can reach up to 7 levels representing the steps to reach eternal rest. The richness of this manifestation of Mexican culture is so vast, that UNESCO - United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization- included it on its List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, defining it as an integrative, representative and community-based traditional expression. UNESCO cites "this festival has given rise to diverse popular expressions, transmitted from generation to generation and to which, with the passage of time, different meanings and evocations have been added according to the indigenous people, community or group that carries them out, in the countryside or in the city."
